6 Ways Your Attitude Could be Damaging Your Job Hunt You could be the most qualified candidate on the market, but if you go about your job search with the wrong attitude, you could still struggle to secure a job. Theres more to hire-ability than your qualifications and skills, as people want to hire individuals who are easy to get on with and  are  driven to achieve their best in their jobs. If you make a poor impression in your interview it could cost you the job, so make sure you enter your job hunt with a positive and proactive approach. Even if your job hunt has left you feeling pretty fed up, its important that you do not allow this to affect your behaviour. Here are a few mistakes that could hinder your job hunt: 1) Hostility Managers dont want to hire people with a frosty demeanor, they want to work with people  who are friendly and will work well with others. If you dont  come across as an approachable and sociable individual, you are likely to raise concerns that you wouldnt fit in well with the team, or could cause conflict in the workplace. Make conversation with your interviewer to ensure that they feel at ease around you and never underestimate the power of a smile! 2) Arrogance Confidence can be a good thing when interviewing for a new job, as  its essential that you have faith in your own abilities; however there is a fine line between self-assurance and arrogance. Nobody wants to work with somebody who regards themselves as a gift from God. Even if you are amazing at your job and could well be the best candidate for the job, by no means should you start shouting this from the rooftops, itll only send your interviewer running a mile! 3) Pessimism Pessimism and feeling sorry for yourself will get you know where and if you dont think youre going to achieve anything, then you probably wont! If youve been struggling in your job search, it may have left you feeling pretty disheartened, but try not to let it show when it comes to interviewing for a new role. Try to be optimistic about your chances and in turn you will demonstrate the positive go-getting attitude that lots of employers look for in their staff. 4) Laziness Job hunting isnt an easy task and if you want to land your dream job, youre going to have to put the time and effort in! If you sit back and expect somebody else to do the leg work, you are never going to get anywhere, even if a contact said that they can help you out. One way to prove that you are self-motivated and serious about a job is by following up your job applications and interviews, rather than sitting back and waiting to hear from employers. 5) Rudeness Rudeness isnt a very favourable  trait to possess in general, so youre certainly not going to impress an interviewer or hiring manager if you have no manners! Make sure that you thank them for their time and consideration during the application process and if offered an interview, be sure to present yourself smartly, shake their hand and behave in a polite manner throughout. Manners dont cost a thing, but make a world of difference! 6) Self deprecation If you have no confidence in your capabilities, then why would an employer? You have to really sell yourself in your job hunt and know how to promote your best qualities and skills, so have faith in yourself. Understand #PowerPose To Have Good Body Language For Success In the following TED talk, Amy Cuddy explains how your body language shapes who you are.  Body language affects how others see us, but it may also change how we see ourselves. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy shows how “power posing” â€" standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don’t feel confident â€" can affect testosterone and cortisol levels in the brain, and might even have an impact on our chances for success. Amy Cuddy’s research on body language reveals that we can change other people’s perceptions â€" and even our own body chemistry â€" simply by changing body positions. Risk tolerance, which is the gambling, what we find is that when youre in the high-power pose condition, 86 percent of you will gamble. When youre in the low-power pose condition,only 60 percent, and thats a pretty whopping significant difference. Heres what we find on testosterone.From their baseline when they come in, high-power people experience about a 20-percent increase, and low-power people experience about a 10-percent decrease. So again, two minutes, and you get these changes. Heres what you get on cortisol. High-power people experience about a 25-percent decrease, and the low-power people experience about a 15-percent increase. So two minutes lead to these hormonal changes that configure your brain to basically be either assertive, confident and comfortable, or really stress-reactive, and, you know, feeling sort of shut down. And weve all had the feeling, right? So it seems that our nonverbals do govern how we think and feel about ourselves, so its not just others, but its also ourselves. Going Travelling Use your experiences to land the job. It is nearly the beginning of the last term of the academic year. Many of you may be trying to look past the exams, to the fun you are going to have over summer. Maybe you’re going travelling? Perhaps you’re also thinking of applying for some jobs? It’s important to make sure that you reflect on your travel experiences so that you can “sell” them effectively to your prospective employers. I’ve been thinking about this blog because I ve just been on holiday to Vietnam and Cambodia. Ive tried to ponder what would be the best way to  talk about  my experiences to an employer. Its important to do better than the hackneyed travel broadens the mind approach. Why not think about specific experiences from your holiday and relate them to the world of work? This will allow you to tell a compelling and personal story that might really resonate with that target recruiter. Here, by way of example,  are some thoughts which might help you to build your own case to  pique the interest of employers. 1. Travel makes you look at different perspectives. I went to the War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City. I expected it to be challenging and difficult and it was. Of course the museum portrays one point of view, but the stories of atrocities are compelling. After the visit, and while I still felt haunted by many of the images, I met and talked to an American who had also just been to the museum. His take on it was that it was an awesome piece of propaganda and that there had clearly been massive corruption on both sides. It is interesting to see how different people coming from different backgrounds can look at the same thing in some divergent ways. There are messages for the workplace here. It’s important to be aware that the reaction of others is coloured by their personal and cultural backgrounds. It may be necessary to explain your thinking very clearly and to check understanding. Its always worth considering whether others are likely to view things in the same way as you. Try  to be conscious of your own cultural “baggage”, your age, your economic circumstances, perhaps also your religion  and try to consider whether this means that you see things differently from those around you.   If you have this personal insight and understanding youre more likely to be able to forge effective working relationships with colleagues. 2. Travel teaches you how to surrender control Now I am very impatient and am a bit of a control freak, I don’t find it easy to submit to the “process” of travel. I can’t control the time an aircraft takes off or how long a flight takes, or even whether my baggage has made it to the plane. When I travel I have to consciously practise letting go. My flight back from Ho Chi Minh City ran a bit late, I needed to make a connection in Paris and it was clear that time would be tight. There was absolutely nothing I could do, worrying wasn’t going to change anything. At work it is good to be organised and to plan and to set up contingencies but sometimes you have to “go with flow”.   It is important to understand that no one individual can control everything or do everything. You have to be prepared to rely on colleagues and to be confident that they will do their jobs correctly. I am going to try to remember this at least for a few weeks! 3.  Travel shows you how much you take for granted In the UK I never stop to be grateful for the clean drinking water which comes out of the tap. Suddenly, when you realise that it’s not such a good idea to use the tap water, even to clean your teeth, the unthinking acceptance of that clean water seems a bit ungrateful. It isn’t just material things which we take for granted though; it is also our skills and abilities. We often spend time worrying about the things we don’t think we’re so good at, but rarely stop to be grateful for the thinks which come easily to us. If you’re thinking about  applying  for jobs, then  remember to tell employers about those strengths you’ve never had to work at and which you might not necessarily value properly. Perhaps you’re a natural communicator or a very creative thinker? Make sure you promote your strengths. Your travel narrative  will be different but I hope this gives you an idea of how you might use  your own  experiences to help you to land a job.

It’s a sad sign of the times, for both consumers (though they have contributed to the loss) and for retail owners who have had to relinquish the battle. How can you stay open when Amazon, eBay and the like (as well as the bigger retail giants) are taking a share of your customers away from you? It’s not easy, but don’t give up the fight just yet.
